Valeriu Mladin
Born on May, 1958, Romania.
Lives and works in his own studio in Bucharest.
Contemporary visual artist whose practice combines monumental drawing, large-scale painting, and sculpture with installation, performance, video, and photography.
His work addresses socio-political and existential themes, questioning collective memory and the fragility of life. The anti-communist Revolution of 1989 was a fundamental turning point, reflected in early installations such as “Who Shot at Us?” – 1992 and “Ten Years After” – National Museum of Art of Romania, Bucharest, 1999.
His long-term project, “Political Bestiary” (2013–2025), brings together large-scale charcoal works depicting human figures with animal heads, a symbolic bestiary that transcends immediate history and reflects more broadly on human nature, power, and identity.
In 2009, the series “44” explored the theme of social equality and inequality through a cycle of portraits and monumental canvases realized in an experimental technique. More recently, the series “Dead Dove” (2023–2025) deepens the exploration of life and death through an austere and poetic visual language, charged with symbolic and personal dimensions.
Throughout his career, Mladin has exhibited widely, both nationally and internationally, building an artistic universe with strong visual and emotional impact—situated at the intersection of art and life, politics and intimacy, memory and the present.
